Jojoba oil is a fantastic natural moisturiser and skin balancer. I began using Jojoba oil for clear and balanced skin last year. It is a definite favourite of mine. That is why I have decided to dedicate a whole blog post to it!

Jojoba has been around for centuries and stood the test of time. I can strongly recommend Jojoba oil for clear and balanced skin. I have been using it for a while now and my skin feels soft, balanced and moisturised without feeling oily or greasy.

I have oily/combination skin so it is a great natural product to combat excess oil production and balances the skin, like a toner. Best part is, it is natural and relatively inexpensive. It is also recommended for dry skin as it is a superior moisturiser than many.

Here is a little run down about Jojoba oil –

The Jojoba plant is known as Simmondsia chinensis and is native to Arizona, Mexico, and California. It grows in dry areas to around 15ft and the seeds are used to extract wax, then refined into oil.

Jojoba seed oil is extracted from the seed of the Simmondsia chinensis plant. The oil is extracted and is similar to a wax. It is made up of mono-esters of long-chain fatty acids and alcohols with a trace amount of triglyceride esters.

Traditionally, jojoba seed oil was used to treat wounds during the war. By the 1970’s it became available in shops. Whaling was banned and the need for a substitute for sperm whale oil made it a great commodity. In the 1940’s jojoba was used as a machinery lubricant substitute similar to oil for its similarities to motor oil, transmission oil and for machine gun parts.

Jojoba is also a great natural pesticide. It helps protect plants against mildew and insects and flies. It has no harmful effects such as common pesticides on the environment.

It is chock full of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Vitamin E, B-complex, zinc, selenium, iodine, chromium and copper are plentiful. It has a golden colour which changes to clear when processed and refined. It has a great shelf life and has no smell.

It is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. It is non-toxic, balances oil production and doesn’t clog pores so an ideal skin product. It can also be used as a hair oil treatment so very versatile and  great beauty choice.

Jojoba is also a well known acne treatment due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It is a fantastic healer too so can be used to treat wounds, various skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, cracked skin and sunburn and speeds up the healing process.

It can be used as a facial cleanser, moisturiser and oil balancing lotion in one. It makes a great body lotion for the moisturising properties and it is non-greasy so a great all-rounder. I can be used as a makeup remover and is gentle enough t remove eye makeup without irritation.

Jojoba is used for the reduction of stretch marks, fixing areas of dry/cracked skin and even as a scalp treatment for dandruff. It can be used as a hand and nail lotion/oil as it is nourishing and helps maintain healthy skin and nails.

It neutralises sebum so is ideal for acne, spot treatment and prevention as well as maintaining a healthy scalp and reducing hair loss. It helps unclog follicles in the hair shaft thus helping and accelerating hair growth. It improves blood circulation and conditions hair giving it a wonderful shine. It can even be used to treat an oily scalp as it regulates the oil production.

It can be used as a natural nappy/diaper rash lotion and works brilliantly. I always use natural and organic products for my babies skin. Contrary to belief, there are a few natural remedies which work just as well if not better than those prescribed and chemical-laden options.

Amazingly, Jojoba can be used as a topical treatment for rheumatism and arthritis. It is applied directly to the skin area daily and provides relief due to containing an anti-inflammatory ingredient known as myristic acid.

Due to protection of the sebum, it helps shield the skin from external toxins, since the body is only able to produce so much. It is the best natural supplement for the sebum produced. As we get older, the body slows down its production of sebum, resulting in drier and duller looking complexion. By introducing a small amount of Jojoba to your skin care routine, it counteracts the problem. It can be added to your moisturiser or used as a facial oil in place of serum.

For dry hair, it can be added to shampoo or conditioner for extra moisture. For a great hair treatment and shine, use as a hair mask for an hour once a week. I heat mine slightly in the microwave (20seconds) for best results as a hot oil treatment as it really penetrates the hair follicle that way. Wash it out with a sulphate-free shampoo and there is no need for conditioner. Then I sometimes use a tiny amount as a serum when wet.

You really only need a tiny amount as a little goes a long way. This means you get a long time out of a bottle so it is worth spending a little extra and getting the organic kind. I think it is safest to choose certified organic to make sure it is the proper quality.

Jojoba helps prevent blackheads by eliminating bacteria on the face when used purely and regularly. Add a small amount to a cotton pad and swipe along the pores as a last skin care step. It clears your pores and balances the skin and sebum.

All in all, I love Jojoba for these reasons. I was recommended it a couple of years back and had been meaning to try it but I was sceptical. I have to say it is a permanent staple in my natural beauty arsenal now. I wouldn’t be without it! Try using Jojoba oil for clear and balanced skin and you will be amazed by the results.

It has so many benefits and uses, it is a hugely popular carrier oil for using essential oils and making your own products from home.
