Is Sodium Benzoate Safe? Here are my Findings…

a lab testing chemicals like sodium benzoate

Is Sodium Benzoate safe? Sodium Benzoate is a preservative chemical found in foods such as jams, sauces, soda drinks and more. It occurs naturally in fruits such as apples, cranberries, prunes and bilberry. It is also naturally present in some vegetables, prawns and dairy. It is often used in the cosmetics industry and in certain medicines (including over the counter).

The reason I am outlining the safety of sodium benzoate today is because my baby who is only 13 months had a severe allergic reaction to a teething gel recently. She broke out in huge hives and I was desperately trying to figure out what had caused them. I began going through everything she had eaten in the previous days and trying to establish if she had an allergic reaction to the foods. She hadn’t had anything out of the ordinary so I was desperate to find out what else it could be. It was a bank holiday weekend on Sunday and the Doctor was closed until Tuesday so I was worried but I luckily had access to a mother and baby group forum online where I posted a pic. A few of the other mothers mentioned they had seen this kind of rash and confirmed it looked like hives. I had been Googling it myself and it looked to be the same as the hive pics so rather than rush her to the hospital I decided to keep investigating. She had no fever and was absolutely fine other than this rash. read more

How I Choose to be Happy Daily

bright moon through the trees at dusk. Choose happiness

Hi Everyone,

Some of you may have read that headline and think I am being ridiculous. It does sound a little odd, how I choose to be happy daily. I mean, most people just assume that whatever the day brings will decide our happiness, right? For some, this sounds ludicrous as it would suggest that I am going around beaming with glee regardless of my situation.

However, that is an exaggeration! I simply put this into action with my mantra “Happiness is a state of mind”. That means that we have the freedom to choose whether we let negative thoughts dampen our mood. I understand that sometimes it is unavoidable but if you can get through whatever is bringing you down in terms of your mood, you begin to have a strength and power over the negative thought pattern, therefore choosing to be happy daily. read more

Mediterranean Diet Basics and My Weight Loss Journey

mediterranean food on a breakfast tray

Hi lovelies,

I am back in France after a lovely summer in New Zealand but unfortunately the weight I had planned to lose over there is still in place and I didn’t stick to any diet or workout regime over there. I had visions of running every day and becoming a healthier version of myself but I was in constant holiday mode so I never really got around to it haha. Oh well, I am ready for the challenge now and more motivated than ever!

Righto, so here is what happened in New Zealand. After living in France for the last 3 and a half years, I have missed sliced bread. Sounds crazy but you can’t get a decent sliced pan of plain bread here! There are so many and varied breads to choose from and boulangeries on every street corner that the old sliced pan never really took off here. Growing up in Ireland, we ate white sliced bread every day. Toast for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and toasties whenever we felt like it. So I basically missed that, being my comfort food for so long. Needless to say, once we arrived sliced pans were abundant and we were munching on white sliced bread daily. Our local shop was quite expensive over there so vegetables were really over priced. Unfortunately, being in holiday mode ( ah feck it, I’m on holidays! ) I ended up buying sugar-laden muesli bars every time I went to the shop and became hooked on them. I was probably eating 2 a day, thinking they were better than chocolate bars and a healthier option. At least thats what I told myself! read more

What is Negative Self-Talk and How Can we Overcome it?

believe in yourself sand writing

I had never heard of the term negative self-talk before, until a couple of years ago when I read a book about positivity. The book I read was called “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind” and I wrote a post about it a while back, if you wish to read it here. Our inner voice is so important as to how we see ourselves and how our confidence and positivity prevails. It is hard not to criticise ourselves from time to time, or indeed, all the time. I am no stranger to negative self-talk myself so I decided to write a post about it and how I deal with it nowadays. read more
