Eco-Friendly Reusable Bamboo Coffee Cup & Straw

Hi Friends,

Today I am doing a review of my new fave eco-friendly reusable bamboo coffee cup and straw. Sorry I’ve been absent from the blog lately but I have been crazy busy. Moving house, renovating our new bar and restaurant and having guests come to stay. We are opening in just over a week so it has been a tad hectic to say the least! I will be updating you guys on that soon but I want to spread the word about my latest fab finds first!

I am a member of the Ethical Influencers team and as a lovely perk of that, I was given the opportunity to receive a gift of choice from a wonderful eco-friendly and sustainable shop called WAKEcup. They sell a range of sustainable everyday goods that help cut down on single-use plastics. I was delighted to be given the opportunity to try their eco-friendly reusable bamboo coffee cup and straw.

The founders of *WAKEcup, two inspiring entrepreneurs Buffie and Nick were compelled to create the store after watching David Attenburgh’s famous Blue Planet and the film A Plastic Ocean. A snippet from the website –

Each year 100 billion single-use coffee cups end up as landfill, that’s enough to fill The Royal Albert Hall a 1000 times over

It is a scary thought when you realise the damage all that plastic is doing to the environment, especially our oceans and marine life. We definitely need to wake up and start using reusable wherever possible to save the planet. Global warming is coming faster than predicted and we have to do our bit, however small it may seem.

WAKEcup do a whole range of sustainable and useful items such as bottles, bags, mugs, thermos flasks and more. You will be happy to know that if you make a purchase from WAKEcup, 10% of the profits go directly to the Marine Conservation Society.

Thankfully, we are beginning the process of phasing out plastic straws and on our way to getting rid of disposable coffee cups. That will make a huge difference and every little helps. It can even save you money to bring your own cup to some coffee shops nowadays!

Righto, so I received my reusable sustainably sourced bamboo coffee cup and straw in the post from WAKEcup promptly. It came in eco friendly packaging with recycled paper filling instead of the usual bubble wrap so a big thumbs up to that for starters. It was the first time I had seen this kind of clever padding on a jiffy bag.

The coffee cup is really great quality and to be honest it is the nicest coffee cup I have seen. I had never seen a bamboo one, only the metal or ceramic so it is really lovely. It has a metal thermos type inner and the top is easy to open. You screw off the top and it has a rubber bit around the rim to lock in the heat. I guess this is ideal for keeping drinks cool too so great for summer too.

It has a flip top and seems to be very high quality so I can see this lasting. I think the design is classic and won’t date. I am really happy to carry it around when I am out and about or even sitting at the bar having my café at the restaurant.

There is no plastic aftertaste, and my coffee stays fresher and warmer for longer. This is a real bonus since I often get distracted or busy with the kids or anything else in the mornings so even if I am not on the go, I choose to use my WAKEcup most mornings haha!

The bamboo straw is fantastic. It is such a clever idea! We thought we were great getting our paper straws at the restaurant but I am going one better now with this. It works perfectly and looks stylish with its WAKEcup logo etched on the side.

These lovely products are available worldwide from the UK. They have some really cool bags too that are like a brown paper bag style backpack! Really cool. Have a browse for yourself here – *WAKEcup. Let us know if you have a fave eco friendly item in the comments.

  1. You had me at Ireland. My grandfather was born there before immigrating to the USA. That said…I am 63 and in my lifetime we have gone from always having reusable containers ie: returnable soda bottles, milk was delivered in reusable glass bottles, actual glass drinking glasses, home cooked meals and no fastfood at all near where I was raise (S.F. Bay Area, California) the TV dinners came in reusable foil containers, which my mom refilled with leftover turkey dinner… My folks were raised in the Great Depression and they were taught to reuse everything, and we did. Since throw aways are fairly new it seems like it shouldn’t be too hard to go back to reusables.

    1. Hi Mary, thanks for your comment. If only we had followed in your footsteps, it is sad to see the plastic consumption and devastation our generation has caused. Hard to believe. At least we can start taking a step in the right direction x
