Coconut Milk Shampoo

I have recently had a baby and so my days of hair straightening and styling are out the window. I have a naturally curly, messy and unruly mane. Most people have never seen me with my hair curly since i have been heat straightening it with a hairdryer and tongs for about the last 15 years! I can’t believe i ever had so much time on my hands to maintain it for so long. My high maintenance hair days are long gone now haha. I would never find the time with 2 babies under 3 so i have started my quest to find really nourishing haircare in the hope it will repair the years of damage to my once silky curls. I had been saving all the healthy hair tips i can get my hands on for the last year or so believe it or not! I knew this was coming since who really has time to straighten hair with 2 babies? So my hair has basically been a frizzy and unkempt mess for the last while. Arrgghhhhh!!!

If you have been following my blog you probably know by now that I’m not a fan of chemical products. I have removed as many nasty chemicals as possible from my life and my aim is to use completely natural and organic products whenever possible, such as the products i apply directly to my skin and hair. I was advised to try out coconut water and coconut milk as a hair wash so i said i would check it out since i often use coconut oil as a hair mask for condition, shine and helping repair split ends. I figured it was worth a shot.

I started researching DIY shampoos made from natural oils and happened to find 2 really good ones along the way. I have doctored them slightly due to having my own preference and find they work better for me so here goes. Both use coconut milk and i find it gives my hair more strength and bounce. Below are both recipes and they are suitable for all hair types:

Coconut Milk Shampoo Recipe 1:

Ingredients-

1/4 CUP OF COCONUT MILK

1/3 CUP OF LIQUID CASTILE SOAP

2 VITAMIN E CAPSULES

8-10 DROPS OF ESSENTIAL OIL

Just mix the whole lot together and pour into a pump dispenser if you have one or else a bottle, whatever container is available. You can use any essential oil you prefer. I use Rosemary, Lavender and Cedarwood as they are all beneficial for your hair.

Coconut Milk Shampoo Recipe 2:

Ingredients-

1/2 CUP OF LIQUID CASTILE SOAP

1/4 CUP OF COCONUT MILK

1/4 CUP OF LIQUID HONEY

2 TBSP OF ARGAN OR MACADAMIA OIL

1 TBSP OF VITAMIN E OIL

40-50 DROPS OF ESSENTIAL OIL

Mix together and pour into a bottle as before. Seal well and shake before each use. You can choose your essential oils to your own preference but i chose Peppermint and Orange for its lovely scent. There are certain essential oils you can use depending on the condition of your hair also. Here is a sample list-

For dandruff use Sage, Tea tree and Lavender

For hair loss use Rosemary, Peppermint, Cedarwood and Lavender

For glossy hair use Rosemary and Sage with a scent such as Orange or Peppermint

I have come to the conclusion that it is better to only shampoo the hair once a week for best results. Since i have curly hair, i condition my hair twice a week with a good quality natural organic one from NYR. If you would like to see the range you can click on the link below. My hair is in the best condition it has been since i can remember and i believe going down the natural route is definitely the best option. There are no harsh chemicals stripping my hair of its natural oils and i no longer use heated tongs so my natural curls are bouncing back and my hair is revitalised and much easier to tame.

I especially love being able to customise my own shampoo to my specific hair needs and also the lovely scents i can make by mixing essential oils. Im now addicted to creating my own products and i really recommend giving these a go if you have time.

I will continue trying out natural hair products and report back as i find good ones. Im currently trying out various weekly masks to find out what ones work best. Im also looking at making my own hair balms as i think they sound great.

Stay tuned for new hair tips!
